The Website Care Plan

A website is a machine with moving parts. The care plan is who keeps them moving after launch.

02 What it is In plain English

Launch is the start of a site's working life, not the end of it. From that day, three things decay without attention: security, speed, and relevance. Plugins fall behind, forms silently stop delivering, and the copy that was true in March is wrong by September.

The care plan covers the first two absolutely and funds a little of the third every month. I host the site, keep it updated and backed up, monitor it around the clock, and spend a block of my time each month making it better based on what the numbers say.

It's the same arrangement described in the FAQ: a fixed-price build, then a monthly plan to keep the system healthy. If something breaks and it's on my end, you don't pay to have it fixed.

03 What's included 8 items

Every plan covers the same foundation. What varies is the site. A brochure site with forms starts at $150 a month. A site with eCommerce, a learning platform or memberships starts at $300 a month and can pass $1,000 depending on how complex its architecture is and how much of my time you want blocked each month. Billed monthly, quarterly or annually.

  • Managed hostingHosting is scoped and spec'd to what your site or application needs, then provisioned with more than enough resources to handle the workload.
  • Security, in layersLike slices of Swiss cheese: your site or application is protected at the network level, the server level and the application level. If you want to nerd out about it, ask me for the details.
  • Updates, when they are safeRegular software and security updates run as needed and when it is safe to do so, so a bad or botched update never takes the site down or leaves you exposed to a known vulnerability. Things are patched as soon as they need to be.
  • Backups hourly, daily and weeklyRolling backups kept on the server and in at least two remote locations, so there is no single point of failure and you never lose more than an hour of work.
  • Uptime monitoring every two minutesIf the site goes down I'm notified within minutes and usually on the fix before you know there's a problem. Most hosts never tell you. A visitor does.
  • Form and booking checksThe contact form, the audit form and the booking link are tested regularly, because a silent form is the most expensive failure a site can have.
  • 30 minutes of my time, every monthThat is the minimum. Small changes, fixes and copy updates that fit inside it cost nothing extra; beyond it, a discounted hourly rate agreed up front. More complex workloads, such as eCommerce, membership or community sites and learning platforms, usually block more.
  • Urgent response within 4 hoursOn every plan. Mission-critical sites can add a service-level agreement for faster response and remediation.
04 What happens each month Updates · Checks · Ongoing
  1. 01 — Updates

    Patched as needed

Regular software and security updates are performed as needed and when it is safe to do so, so a bad update, or one that conflicts with other software, never breaks your site. If anything misbehaves, it is rolled back from the hourly backups.

  2. 02 — Checks

    Forms, booking, backups

The forms and the booking link are tested end to end and the backups are confirmed, so the most expensive silent failures never stay silent.

  3. 03 — Ongoing

    Monitor, improve, check in

Uptime and performance are monitored around the clock, the included time goes where the numbers point, and you get a short note each month on what changed. If you'd like a monthly or quarterly call to plan the next phase of growth, that's built in; if you'd rather go unbothered while nothing is wrong, that works too.

05 Who it's for For · Not for
Who it's forFour each way
This is for you if
  • I built your site, or it passed an audit first
  • You want one person accountable for the whole thing
  • You'd rather not think about updates, backups or hosting ever again
  • You want the site to get a little better every month
This isn't for you if
  • You want to manage hosting and updates yourself
  • The site was built elsewhere and hasn't been audited yet
  • You need a full-time developer on staff
  • You're looking for a growth retainer (that's a separate, optional engagement)

06 The Heaven Forbid It Break-Up Plan No hostage situations

There is no minimum term and no penalty for leaving. Every care plan contract includes the Heaven Forbid It Break-Up Plan, which makes it explicit: if you ever decide I'm no longer the best fit for your business, you can cancel at any time, and I'll do everything I can to move you to your new provider cleanly.

I've done that handoff a handful of times in ten years, and I can count them on one hand. Making it easy to leave is one of the reasons clients stay. In a sense, my clients are kept in an open cage: free to go whenever it's in their best interest, and the move will be more amicable than your fourth-grade breakup.

Q.01Do you require a long-term retainer?

My core deliverable is the Client Acquisition System, which is a fixed-price project with a very affordable monthly retainer to maintain the systems, security, software updates, and functionality. If anything ever breaks or needs a tweak and the issue is on my end, you don't pay anything for it to be edited. If you need changes from month to month, anything that fits inside the 30 minutes included in your plan costs nothing extra, and time beyond that gets a discounted hourly rate.

However, many serious clients retain me post-launch for ongoing conversion rate optimization (CRO), SEO, and scaling. These retainers are completely optional and run month-to-month after a 3-month minimum commitment to test baseline performance and assess iterations needed for future success and continued growth.

Clients who opt for a growth retainer see the best results over time.

Q.02Who owns the code and assets?

You do. 100% of the intellectual property, code repositories, design files, and operational assets belong to you. For as long as I am maintaining the project post-launch, I host the website and manage the codebase on your behalf to ensure maximum security, performance, and uptime.

However, should you ever decide it's in your best interest to part ways, there are no hostage situations. I include a "Heaven Forbid It Break-Up Plan" directly in my contract. If you and I need to go separate ways, there are no hard feelings. I execute a seamless transfer of all assets and codebase control back to you, setting you up for success to manage things internally or with another vendor.

Q.03Who actually does the work?

Matchless is me, Jon. When a project needs a specialist — a photographer, a copy pass, a niche integration — I bring in a trusted contractor for that piece. You always work directly with me: the person designing, writing, and shipping your system.

Q.04What is the payment schedule?

I offer two payment structures designed to eliminate administrative friction and keep project timelines tight:

1. Paid in Full: 100% upfront payment, which includes a discount on the total project value.

2. 50/50 Split: A 50% deposit is required to commence work. The remaining 50% is automatically collected via a prior authorization agreement exactly 30 days after the project kickoff.

No work begins until the initial payment or authorization is established. In my experience, this structure ensures that both sides remain fully focused on execution and getting the project across the finish line.
